Description
Interleukin 21 (IL-21) is a pro-inflammatory cytokine produced by several T cell subsets, including CD4 T cells, T follicular helper (Tfh) cells, and T helper 17 (Th17) cells.
IL-21 plays a key role in T cell–dependent B cell activation within germinal centers, promoting rapid B cell proliferation and their differentiation into memory B cells and long-lived plasma cells.
In addition, IL-21 supports the proliferation, differentiation, and maintenance of CD8 T cells. It enhances the cytotoxic activity of natural killer (NK) cells and contributes to the regulation of macrophage activation.
Dysregulated or excessive production of IL-21 has been linked to several inflammatory conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and rejection after organ transplantation.
