Description
The Interleukin-1 (IL-1) family of cytokines consists of 11 members that play a key role in regulating immune responses, inflammation, and hematopoiesis. Among these, IL-1α, IL-1β, and the interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1RA) are the most extensively studied. IL-1RA functions as a natural inhibitor, blocking the activity of both IL-1α and IL-1β and helping to control inflammatory responses.
IL-1β is a potent pro-inflammatory cytokine that is essential for host defense against infection and tissue injury. It is primarily produced and secreted by innate immune cells, including monocytes and macrophages. IL-1β plays a central role in initiating and amplifying inflammatory signaling pathways.
As a key mediator of the innate immune system, IL-1β acts as an early responder to infection, cellular stress, and tissue damage. It is widely studied in immunology, inflammation research, and disease models, making it an important biomarker and target in cytokine ELISA and ELISPOT assays.
