Description
Interleukin-5 (IL-5) is a key cytokine involved in the regulation of immune responses, particular in allergic inflammation and eosinophilic disorders. IL-5 exerts pleiotropic effects on multiple target cells including B cells, eosinophils, and basophils.
IL-5 is produced by a variety of hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic cells, such as T helper 2 (Th2) cells, granulocytes, natural killer (NK) cells. As a pro-inflammatory cytokine, IL-5 plays a central role in promoting activation, proliferation, and survival of eosinophils, Th2 cells and B cells.
