Description
Interleukin 13 (IL-13) is a cytokine primarily produced by activated T helper (Th2) cells. It plays an important role in B-cell maturation and differentiation. In addition, IL-13 downregulates macrophage activity and inhibits the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines.
Although Th2 cells are the main source, IL-13 is also produced by other immune cell, including natural killer (NK) cells, mast cells, basophils and eosinophils. These cells contribute to its role in allergic responses.
